Summer! It’s Time for Reading, Baseball and Saving the Chesapeake Bay!
Montgomery County Public Libraries is thrilled to partner for the third year in a row with the Washington Nationals to support our Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Challenge! Our goal this summer is to help save the Chesapeake Bay. Participants can do that by finishing three missions and logging their books/activities online. Everyone who signs up for the Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Challenge! will receive a free book while supplies last.
The Nationals are generously supplying a baseball ticket voucher to participants 17 years and younger who complete Mission Two of our Summer Reading Challenge! while supplies last.
Patrons have eagerly awaited Opening Day of Mission Two on July 11 so they can begin reading and completing activities to earn their vouchers. One young reader, upon hearing about the vouchers, said
“I can’t wait for Mission Two to start and I’m getting ready for it now.”
Another patron said that her family used their vouchers last year “and we had a great time! We will definitely finish Mission Two so we can go this year, too!”
Mission Two is to plant 250,000 oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.
The oysters will be planted by our partner, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. To complete Mission Two, participants ages 0-5 and 6-12 can either read four books or complete four activities, or some combination of the two. Readers ages 0-5 and 6-12 who complete Mission Two also earn a Chesapeake Oyster Facts bookmark and a Minnow e-badge (ages 0-5) or a Navigator e-Badge (ages 6-12). Teen participants (ages 13-17) who read two books, or complete two activities, or a combination, earn an Oyster Facts bookmark, an e-Badge, and virtual raffle tickets to win fabulous fabulous prize packages. All participants may add a sticker to the ocean poster at their local branch after they complete Mission Two.
Readers may redeem the vouchers for two (2) tickets in select areas of Nationals Park for one game occurring in July, August, or September, and there are plenty of games to choose from. Vouchers must be redeemed by September 7, 2022.
Be Part of the Team that Reads This Summer
To redeem the voucher, participants should visit Nationals.com/Summerreading and scroll to the list of partners until they find Montgomery County Public Libraries. From there, they should click the “redeem vouchers” button, and then enter the code printed on their voucher. Participants can then choose which game they’d like to attend from a list of more than 20 games. After they choose their game, participants can choose their seats.
In addition to the voucher program, Montgomery County Public Libraries and the Washington Nationals are helping to spread the word about each other’s summer reading programs through social media, printed literature including bus placards, and in the Nationals’ case, scoreboard advertisements.
