What a Summer It Was at MCPL!
As summer draws to a close, so too does Montgomery County Public Libraries’ 2023 Summer Reading Challenge! All Together Now, and what a summer it was! A whopping 14,156 kids and teens participated in the challenge this year, an increase of over 1,000 participants from last year. In addition to reading books and spreading kindness throughout our community, we also had a calendar packed with magic shows, STEM mysteries, music performances, animal guests, and much, much more.

Each of the 14,156 participants went home with a complimentary book, and had the opportunity to earn a ton of incentives, including bookmarks, baseball ticket vouchers courtesy of the Washington Nationals, and book vouchers for the Friends of the Library bookstores courtesy of The Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, MD. In addition to the Nats vouchers and book vouchers, teens also had the opportunity to win a variety of raffle prizes, including a Nintendo Switch OLED bundle.
The last day to redeem the Nationals ticket vouchers is September 6th, and the last day to pick up bookmarks, vouchers, and free books is September 8th. Teens must allocate their e-raffle tickets toward the prizes of their choice by September 7th, and the drawing will be held the following day.
A Summer of Kindness
With your help, we were able to:
- Be Kind to Animals by helping shelter animals find forever homes
- Be Kind to People by providing 812 healthy meals to 300 families in our community
- Be Kind to the Planet by adding 460 solar panels to our parks
We couldn’t have spread so much kindness throughout our community without the help of The Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, MD as well as our partners, Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center, Friends of Montgomery County Animals, Manna Food Center, and Montgomery Parks Foundation.
