One Maryland, One Book book of the year is There, There by Tommy Orange

One Maryland, One Book is Maryland’s only statewide community reading program—like one big book club. It’s an opportunity for people to read a good book and come together for thoughtful discussion. The Maryland Center for the Book at Maryland Humanities, coordinator of One Maryland One Book, partners with organizations in communities across the state to create engaging programs related to the topics and themes of each year’s selection.

Released in 2018, There There by Tommy Orange tells the interconnected stories of a cast of twelve Native characters from across generational lines, as they converge toward the Big Oakland Powwow. The stories give a riveting portrait of the urban Indian experience. There There was one of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year, and won the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize, as well as the PEN/Hemingway Award.
