We certainly had an adventure at the library this summer! Kids soothed the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair animals with bedtime stories, planned for the zombie apocalypse with The Last Kids on Earth author Max Brallier, and prepared their Pokémon teams for battle. Teens used science to solve a mystery and launched a Dungeons & Dragons campaign to save our summer reading mascot Mari Mariposa, while adults explored mocktail mixology, met up at local brewery for library trivia, and took their chances at Drag Bingo.

More than 16,000 people registered for the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, including:
- 10,950 children
- 1,794 teens
- 3,915 adults
We hosted nearly 300 events across 21 branches, including magicians, musicians, science demonstrations, and live animal interactions. Challenge participants earned 3,828 vouchers for tickets to see the Washington Nationals and Mystics, collectors’ cards featuring Montgomery County parks, entries for prize drawings–and a whole lot of books!
But it wasn’t just the participants who won this summer. Thanks to our challenge participants, the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County (FOMLC) made a donation to the Montgomery Parks Foundation to increase accessibility to our parks, preserve our county’s history, and help keep our parks beautiful for generations to come.
Many thanks to our partners for the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge:
- Friends of the Library, Montgomery County
- Montgomery Parks Foundation and Montgomery Parks
- Washington Nationals
- Washington Mystics
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge!
Plans for 2025 are already underway, but in the meantime keep your eyes open for news about our Winter Reading Challenge, starting in mid-December.
